Sever's Disease
Sever's Disease, otherwise known as calcaneal apophysitis is an inflammation of the growth plate in the heel of growing children, typically adolescents. Sever's presents as heel pain and is caused by poor biomechanics and repetitive stress. Sever's is quite common in active children.
Symptoms
-
Heel pain which is usually aggravated by physical activity such as walking, running or jumping. Occasionally, the pain may cause limping and interfere with performance in sports.
Causes
-
Foot Mechanics - Over-pronation, a flattening of the arch which is couple with an inward rotation of the heel causing unusual stress through the growth plate of the calcaneus (heel).
-
Overuse - Sever's is directly to increased activity and overuse with poor foot mechanics.

How Orthotics Help
Custom orthotics with a deeper heel cup, will help to control the over pronation, improve the foots mechanics and decrease the strain on the calcaneal (heel) growth plate. Heel padding in the orthotic will also help to provide relief.
