Metatarsalgia
Metatarsalgia is described as pain around the ball of the foot when weight-bearing. It can come on gradually over time or suddenly as a result of trauma.
Symptoms
- Achy, sharp or even a burning pain in the forefoot.
- Bruised, painful to touch forefoot.
- Walking barefoot is usually more aggravating than in a shoe.
Causes
- Foot Mechanics - all foot types with poor mechanics are susceptible.
- Trauma - a contusion to the forefoot.
- Activities - increased activities and poor foot mechanics.
- Fat Pad Atrophy - a decrease in the forefoot fat pad, particularly in the aged.

How Orthotics Help
Custom foot orthotics will help by improving the foots mechanics decreasing the pressure on the forefoot. Also, the orthotic will provide more equal distribution of pressure throughout the foot, decreasing the forefoot pressure. Forefoot padding may be added to the orthotic to provide some cushion in the case of a thinning fat pad. Metatarsal pads may also be added to the orthotic to support the foots transverse arch and decrease pressure on the metatarsal heads in the forefoot.
